Sometimes it feels as futile as putting your resume in a bottle and throwing it in the lake.\u00a0 Actually, that\u2019s not fair to the lake.<\/p>\n<p>So why is no one hiring you? Not just from Craigslist, but from any of these new automated systems that just don\u2019t get weather jokes? Because <em>you<\/em> haven\u2019t adapted yet. But fear not\u2014we at Resume Target have compiled the four steps you need to combat internet anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>Read on, intrepid candidate, it\u2019s time to venture into a brave new world.<\/p>\n<h4>Step One: First Impressions are King.<\/h4>\n<p>You knew that. That\u2019s why you used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resumetarget.com\/blog\/a-lesson-on-dressing-for-a-successful-interview\/\">put on that dapper suit<\/a>. But here\u2019s what people tend to overlook: now your <em>e-mail<\/em> is your suit. The vast majority of resumes and cover letters are never even opened. Why? Because the e-mail didn\u2019t say anything.<\/p>\n<p><em>To Whom It May Concern<\/em> is a bad start. This isn\u2019t a memorandum on world peace. You know who it concerns: the Hiring Manager. But DO NOT copy and paste your entire resume and cover letter into the body and send it off; a busy hiring manager will probably take one look, sigh deeply, delete it, and go for a coffee.<\/p>\n<h4>Step Two: Bring the Smile Back. <\/h4>\n<p>Here is a simple truth: everyone likes to put a face to a name. Just because a hiring manager can\u2019t interview everyone in person doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re not a little curious about what you look like\u2014it&#8217;s human nature. Enter LinkedIn.<\/p>\n<p>Attaching a photo of yourself to an e-mail is tantamount to throwing your own resume in the garbage. It\u2019s unprofessional and puts the hiring manager in a tough position. But LinkedIn is perfectly acceptable. Put your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resumetarget.com\/blog\/the-dos-and-donts-of-adding-your-resume-to-linkedin\/\">LinkedIn URL on your resume<\/a>, or better yet, hyperlink your name.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a question of beauty or brawn or anything else\u2014they just like to see the person they\u2019re reading about.<\/p>\n<h4>Step Three: Make Sure Your Resume Doesn\u2019t Suck. <\/h4>\n<p>In the good old days, when you handed a resume over in person, it was possible to overcome a sub-par resume. Not anymore. Your resume and cover letter have to speak for you.<\/p>\n<p>They have to tell a potential employer what you\u2019ve done, and more importantly, what you\u2019re <em>going <\/em>to do for them. You need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resumetarget.com\/blog\/what-to-include-in-your-value-statement\/\">value statement<\/a>, a list of core skills, and job descriptions that don\u2019t sound like you stole them from the original posting for your role.<\/p>\n<p>You need to convey your achievements and added value and tell them <em>why <\/em>they shouldn\u2019t throw your bottle back in the lake. If you don\u2019t know how to write one, get professional assistance. A little money now might lead to a lot more money in the future.<\/p>\n<h4>Step Four: The Follow-up <\/h4>\n<p>Ah, the follow-up.
