In fact, it\u2019s debated that a first impression can take <a href=\"http:\/\/www.careerealism.com\/first-impressions\/\">less than 30 seconds to be formed<\/a>. That\u2019s not a great deal of time to work with, I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll agree.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, this particular blog entry attempts to look at six different aspects of your first meeting with an employer. Don\u2019t worry about training seminars, this article is your one-stop shop for making an ace first impression.<\/p>\n<h3>1)\u00a0Look your very best<\/h3>\n<p>Nothing sets the image, tone and perception of someone quite like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resumetarget.com\/blog\/what-to-wear-to-work-how-your-style-affects-your-career\/\">the <i>way <\/i>they look and dress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You could have the communication skills of a blubbering toddler but as long as your attire is smart, neat and appropriate, you\u2019d be surprised at how far it can take you.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just about the clothing arrangement though \u2013 your physical appearance is equally important. Get a haircut, have a clean shave (females are allowed to skip that one) and give your face a good scrub.<\/p>\n<h3>2)\u00a0For goodness sake \u2013 smile!<\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019re about to make that crucial first handshake with the employer \u2013 time for a facial expression to match.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right, it\u2019s time to smile you miserable sod. A smile says you\u2019re pleased to be there and you\u2019re happy to have met the person in question which is always a good signal to the recipient.<\/p>\n<h3>3) Maintain eye contact<\/h3>\n<p>Now you\u2019ve managed to successfully negotiate the much anticipated greeting process, concentrate on remaining interested with what the person opposite you has to say. And, in order to demonstrate that you are indeed listening \u2013 and captivated with what they\u2019re talking about \u2013 you need to maintain good eye contact.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, when directing your responses back to an interviewer, keeping eye contact will convey a sense of confidence and assurance in what you\u2019re saying.<\/p>\n<h3>4)\u00a0Address them by their name<\/h3>\n<p>It can be argued that addressing someone by their name is a very small detail when it comes to meeting someone for the first time, but remember, you only have 30 seconds to play with \u2013 this is all about small details!<\/p>\n<p>Using someone\u2019s name shows that (1) you know who they are (always a good sign), and (2) you identify them as a significant individual.<\/p>\n<h3>5)\u00a0Have confidence in your ability<\/h3>\n<p>Talking of confidence, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resumetarget.com\/blog\/interview-tips-how-to-stand-out\/\">to make a good first impression<\/a>, you need to be just that (confident!). Try not to be a sweating, quivering wreck \u2013 it\u2019s not a great look.<\/p>\n<p>Emit confidence in what you have to say and ensure that your handshake is firm and meaningful. As long as you\u2019re confident in your ability, that will only serve to transmit back to the person in front of you.<\/p>\n<h3>6)\u00a0Show interest in what they have to say<\/h3>\n<p>Holding eye contact is one thing, but having a genuine interest in what someone has to say (or at least pretending to) is another. Nodding appreciatively is a great way of doing this.<\/p>\n<p>Equally, don\u2019t be a wet lettuce and just sit there in silence. Don\u2019t be afraid to add your own comments or thoughts on what the employer-come-interviewer has to say. Just don\u2019t interrupt them.
