Given the move Patrick was looking to make, we wanted to ensure there was equal focus on his 9-1-1 dispatcher role and his union experience. In particular, he wanted to highlight the connection between the two.
We started our interview by delving into his work experience and the critical responsibilities he held. We identified key skills that would be pertinent to both his current position and the labor relations role he aspired towards.
The primary skills we focused on encompassed team leadership, effective communication, regulatory knowledge, interpersonal relationship management, and strategic problem-solving. These competencies were instrumental in aligning his experience with both industries, laying a solid foundation for Patrick's success in his career transition.
I had a lot of transferable skills, but I didn’t know how to put them down on paper and in such a way that other employers could see that someone who had been working in a completely different industry could be a good fit for them,” Patrick explained.
When addressing his union experience, our focus was on showcasing Patrick's continuous involvement and career progression since his initial joining.
Rather than just outlining his responsibilities, we delved into Patrick’s significant accomplishments during his tenure with the union. This involved highlighting specific metrics, initiatives, and processes in which Patrick played a pivotal role, illustrating the impact he made within the organization over time.
Finally, we ensured that the documents were optimized for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), a new concept for Patrick. This included incorporating relevant keywords to enhance searchability and increase his chances of success in his job search.
